Broken Wings Mr. Mister Remix

February 1st 2011.

I like Music. I like music from the eighties particularly if it has a snare drum in it. One of my favourite 80s songs was Broken Wings by Mr. Mister.

There are two versions of the song; the radio version is four and half minutes long and the album mix is a minute longer. In both songs the beat doesn't kick in until two and a half minutes in to the song.

I always thought it would be great to have a beat all the way throughout the song, so I remixed it and put a beat all the way through. You can listen to this on the right.

The first thing I did was get the song from iTunes. I then used a program to analyse the beats per minute or bpm of the track (100 beats per minute) so I could create beats that exactly matched the song. I went off to my snythesiser and I came up with three types of drum loops for the song.

The first was a simple bass drum which would set the tone of the track.
On top of that I needed a clap so I opted to a hip-hop clap containg three drum beats offset to the clap sounds. Lastly I used a snare drum sound to re-enforce the clap because this is an eighties track after all.

I imported the song in to Apple's Garageband program which is simple and very powerful.
I aligned my beats to the appropriate places in the song and let it build up as it progressed. You don't actually hear the native beat of the song until the singer says "yeah, yeah" after about two and a half minutes and my beat, which goes underneath, syncs perfectly.

There have been many attempts to turn this in to a techno style song which it is not.
My remix gives it a beat you could dance to while keeping the integrity of the track. When I created the youtube video for the song, I couldn't find the album length version, so I had to re-edit the video around the five and a half minute mix.
