Just one hour away by car, you can see one of the best preserved monastic sites in Ireland, founded by Saint Kevin in the 6th Century, almost 1500 years ago. It features churches, some of which are over one thousand years old, an intact celtic belltower and cemetery which was in use until quite recently.
Glendalough became major ecclesiastical site and place of pilgrimage. Its monks created one of the most beautiful manuscripts of the period. Wood from the hinterland was used to construct one the largest Viking boats every discovered and the patron Saint of Dublin used the valley as a retreat from hustle and bustle of Dublin, as can you.
This half day tour from Dublin lasts 4 hours, with over two hours on site and just under one hour travel time to and from your hotel. It can be done in the morning or afternoon and there is time for a relaxed coffee, lunch or drinks on site.
This private excursion to Glendalough monastic site costs €400 in total for two people and includes private transport in a Mercedes S Class, collection at your hotel, entrance tickets, the tour itself and return to your hotel at the end of the tour. Each additional person costs €100 up to a maximum of 6 people.
If religious history is not your thing, but you would like to take a half day excursion out of the Irish capital, you could instead visit the Powerscourt House and Gardens. Powerscourt features Italian gardens, a mansion, statues, Japanese gardens, fountains and even a pet cemetery.

Dara made the whole foot pounding experience very interesting with a touch of humour thrown in for good measure. Without him pointing out things on the way we would have missed a lot. My teenage daughter was not looking forward to the tour, but afterwards she commented on how much she got out of it and found it very funny.
